Villa Ottone Gais / Uttenheim

Gais: Where history meets water

The village of Gais, located 841 meters above sea level, stretches along the banks of the Aurino stream, between Brunico and the picturesque Val di Tures. To reach it, you pass through a narrow rocky gorge dominated by the ruins of the Castello di Chela, a natural gateway to the village and its Alpine charm.

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by Bronze Age remains discovered on the “Pipe” hill (Ger. Piperg). The village’s very name has Indo-European origins and means “alluvial land,” perfectly in tune with the landscape rich in streams and waterways that cross it.

A village of sacred art and passion for detail

Gais preserves one of South Tyrol’s Romanesque gems: the Parish Church of St. John the Evangelist, built in the 12th century and still today one of the spiritual symbols of the village. A short distance away, the Hotel Burgfrieden houses an unusual Firefighter Museum, displaying over 600 firefighting helmets from all over the world — a delightful treasure for enthusiasts and the curious alike.

Villa Ottone: A hamlet of art and silence

Villa Ottone (Uttental in German), a hamlet of the municipality, is a picturesque corner surrounded by nature and works of art. Here stand remarkable buildings such as the Church of St. Margaret, the Stock Residence and the impressive Castello Uttenheim, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the valley.

But Villa Ottone is also known as the birthplace, in the late 15th century, of the Master of Villa Ottone, a painter whose panel works are now preserved in prestigious places such as the Abbey of Novacella, the Innsbruck Museum and the one in Vienna. A deep bond unites this quiet village with the sacred art of historical Tyrol.

Gais, where simplicity becomes beauty

Between crystal-clear waters, ancient churches, curious collections and an ever-authentic landscape, Gais is the ideal destination for those who love tranquility, a connection with history and unspoiled nature. Perfect for a stay combining culture, walks and evocative views of the Val Pusteria.
