Valle di Casies: A hidden gem among the South Tyrolean mountains
The Valle di Casies, stretching for about 22 km, branches off from the Val Pusteria near Monguelfo and extends northward to the Austrian border. This enchanting valley is framed by the majestic peaks of the Vedrette di Ries and the Deferegger Alps, offering alpine views of rare beauty.
The villages of the valley: Colle, San Martino and Santa Maddalena
Along the valley lie picturesque villages that have preserved the traditions and architecture typical of South Tyrol:
- Colle (Pichl): Located at 1,260 m a.s.l., it is home to the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, built in 1472 and later renovated in Neo-Gothic style in 1879.
- San Martino (St. Martin): At 1,276 m a.s.l., this village is known for its Parish Church dedicated to St. Martin the Bishop, originally Gothic and later renewed in Baroque style in the 18th century.
- Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalena): Set at 1,400 m a.s.l., it is the last inhabited center of the valley. The Parish Church of St. Magdalena, dating back to the 15th century, has been restored to its original Gothic style.
Father Joachim Haspinger: The hero of the Val Casies
The valley was the birthplace of Father Joachim Haspinger, a prominent figure during the Tyrolean uprising of 1809. Born in 1776 at the Haspingerhof farmhouse in Santa Maddalena, the “Red-bearded Father” fought alongside Andreas Hofer against the Franco-Bavarian troops. In San Martino, a bronze statue created by sculptor Othmar Winkler in 1959 commemorates his bravery and his contribution to the Tyrolean cause. In the same village stands Father Haspinger’s house, which in 1909 was converted into an open-air shooting range. Inside, a reproduction of Albin Egger Lienz’s famous painting “Der Landsturm” is preserved.
A paradise for nature lovers
The Valle di Casies is a true paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Well-marked trails lead through centuries-old forests, flower-filled meadows and traditional alpine huts, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. In winter, the valley becomes an ideal destination for cross-country skiing, with over 40 km of groomed trails forming part of the Dolomiti Nordicski circuit.
