Alta Badia: Nature and Culture in the Heart of the Dolomites
Alta Badia is located in the southern part of the Val Badia, in South Tyrol, and is nestled between the northern Dolomites. The region develops in a large sunny basin, surrounded by forests, meadows, and pastures, at the foot of majestic mountain ranges: the Sella and Cir groups, Sassongher, Gardenaccia, Sasso Santa Croce, and the Conturines.

The Ladin Valley and its Villages
Alta Badia is bordered by some of the most picturesque valleys in the Dolomites, connected by the passes of Gardena (towards Val Gardena), Campolongo (towards Arabba and the Valle del Cordevole), Valparola, and Falzarego (towards Cortina d’Ampezzo and the Boite Valley).
The villages that make up this Ladin valley are true Alpine gems, each with its own distinct character:
- Badia, the main municipality, with the hamlets of Pedraces and San Leonardo.
- Colfosco, nestled in the Puez-Odle Nature Park.
- Corvara, a hub of Dolomite tourism, frequented since the 18th century.
- La Valle, the most secluded and authentic, where you can admire the typical Les Viles.
- La Villa, famous for the World Cup ski race on the Gran Risa slope.
- San Cassiano, home of the Museum Ladin Ursus Ladinicus, with remains of the prehistoric bear from the Conturines.
In this area, between 85% and 90% of the population speaks Ladin, a linguistic heritage born from the encounter between the Rhaetian culture and Roman influence.
Between Nature Parks and Outdoor Sports
Alta Badia is traversed by two important protected areas: the Puez-Odle Nature Park, established in 1978 and a favorite destination for geology enthusiasts, and the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, recognized in 1980 and known for its alpine lakes and biodiversity.
During the summer season, this corner of the Dolomites becomes a paradise for hikers, sports enthusiasts, and families. Over 400 km of trails for trekking, Nordic walking, and mountain biking allow exploration of valleys, forests, and meadows. You can also try rock climbing, paraglide over the valley, or relax with a round of golf at the Tranrüs 9-hole course. For children and animal lovers, there are stables and horseback riding opportunities.

Winter in Alta Badia: The Kingdom of Snow Sports
With its 54 ski lifts and over 130 km of perfectly groomed slopes, Alta Badia is one of the most popular ski destinations in the Dolomites. It is part of the Dolomiti Superski circuit, which offers the possibility to ski continuously through valleys and historic passes.
In addition to alpine skiing, you can enjoy:
- Cross-country skiing
- Snowshoeing
- Tobogganing
- Ice skating
- Horseback riding on snow
- Romantic horse-drawn carriage rides
Alta Badia is much more than a tourist destination: it’s a way to experience the mountains in harmony with nature and tradition. Whether you visit in summer or winter, it will captivate you with its landscapes, culture, and the authentic hospitality of its people.
