Center of Vipiteno

Vipiteno: A Medieval Gem Among the Alps

The town of Vipiteno, one of South Tyrol’s most charming destinations, stretches from 935 to 2,714 metres above sea level and includes the hamlets of Ceves — part of the scenic circular trail around the town — Tunes, and Novale, which border the urban centre to the north. The area is nestled between the majestic Stubai Alps to the west, the Zillertal Alps to the east, and the Sarentino Alps to the south, offering breathtaking views all year round.

A Town Built on Trade

Vipiteno’s strategic position between the Brenner Pass, the Giovo Pass and the Pennes Pass has made it an important crossroads since the days of the Roman Empire. Both the Amber Road and the Salt Road passed through here, as well as the route of the medieval German emperors heading south.

Its wealth, however, is especially tied to the Ridanna silver mines, which in the Middle Ages fuelled the town’s growth, leading to the construction of churches, noble residences, and, in 1443, the Main Street of the historic centre — now considered one of the most beautiful shopping streets in Europe.

Today, numerous hotels in Vipiteno offer comfortable, welcoming stays, perfect for exploring the town and its surroundings.

What to See in Vipiteno

Vipiteno Torre delle Dodici

The Tower of the Twelve

The undisputed symbol of the town, the Tower of the Twelve (46 metres tall) was built between 1468 and 1472. It separates the Old Town from the New Town and offers a spectacular view over the rooftops of the centre. After a fire in the 19th century, the roof was rebuilt in Alpine style with stone gables.

The Town Hall

Built in 1473, it is one of South Tyrol’s most beautiful public buildings. Inside, it houses a replica of the Mithra stele and a magnificent wood-panelled council chamber with a ceramic stove and chandelier designed from a sketch by Albrecht Dürer.

The Historic Churches

  • Church of the Holy Spirit: Gothic, decorated with frescoes from 1402 by the master Johann of Brunico.
  • Parish Church of Our Lady in the Marshes: built between 1497 and 1524, with Baroque interiors added in 1750. The choir belongs to an earlier Gothic church.
  • Church of Saint Margaret: a Baroque jewel from the 17th century, with an even older bell tower.

The Museums

In the Teutonic Order Palace you’ll find two unmissable museums:

  • The Multscher Museum, with the famous altarpieces depicting the life of Mary and the Passion of Christ.
  • The Vipiteno Civic Museum, located in the palace’s Baroque halls.

The Surroundings: Nature and Authenticity

Unlike Vipiteno, a town with a lavish and medieval appearance, its surroundings are more rural and embrace Mount Cavallo, Campo di Trens, and the Val di Vizze.

Monte Cavallo in winter

Monte Cavallo

The mountain of the people of Vipiteno, located at 2,000 metres above sea level, is a plateau offering endless opportunities: scenic hikes in summer, and skiing and tobogganing in winter (home to one of Italy’s longest toboggan runs!).

Campo di Trens

An independent municipality since 1928, known for two religious buildings of great value: the Church of Saint Oswald and the Shrine of Maria Trens, an important pilgrimage site.

Val di Vizze

One of South Tyrol’s most wild and authentic valleys, perfect for those who love peace and untouched nature. Don’t miss Avenes, at the entrance of the valley, and the mineralogical excursions, ideal for geology enthusiasts.

The Castles: Between History and Mystery

Castle Reifenstein (Castel Tasso)

An imposing fortress with a complex defensive system, accessible only on foot via a forest trail. Nearby is the Chapel of Saint Zeno, not open to visitors but famous for its Bavarian wooden burial coffins.

Castel Pietra

Located southeast of the town, it consists of a lower and upper section with a keep and palace. Damaged during World War II, it has been restored but is not open to the public.

Vipiteno has been voted one of Italy’s most beautiful villages. With enchanting scenery, tranquillity, and cultural attractions steeped in history, don’t miss this jewel of South Tyrol!
