Rio Pusteria: A Medieval Gem Between Two Valleys

Rio Pusteria village

Located at an altitude of 777 metres, Rio Pusteria lies in the Valle Isarco, right at the western entrance to the Pusteria Valley. This charming medieval village, crossed by the Rienza and Rio Valles rivers, tells an ancient story of trade, nobility, and spirituality.

The historic centre is a harmonious ensemble of merchant houses, noble residences, and ancient walls that recall the town’s glorious past and its strategic importance since the Middle Ages.

What to See in Rio Pusteria

Rio Pusteria San Floriano Church

Maria Hilf Chapel

This chapel was renovated in 1778 in full Baroque style thanks to the initiative of a local innkeeper who personally financed the restoration. Its simple yet elegant interior reflects both local devotion and the community’s generosity.

Chapel of Saint Florian with Museum

Built in the 15th century next to the parish church, the Chapel of Saint Florian revealed bones, statues, ancient documents, and even Roman coins during restoration work. Today, part of these findings is displayed in a small museum that enriches the visit.

A fascinating place where archaeology and faith come together.

Parish Church of Saint Helena

Dating back to the 13th century, it was expanded in 1975 with a modern circular structure that harmoniously integrates with the original building. Inside, visitors can admire 15th-century frescoes — precious artistic testimonies of the period.

Kandlburg Manor

This historic estate, dating back before 1676, once served as a judicial seat before becoming the residence of the Counts of Wolkenstein, one of Tyrol’s most influential noble families. The building remains one of the village’s most important landmarks.

Rio Pusteria Fortress (Chiusa di Rio Pusteria)

Between 1458 and 1480, by order of Duke Sigismund, this imposing structure was built to serve as a customs post, defensive stronghold, and local courthouse.

Today, the Rio Pusteria Fortress is perfectly preserved and stands as one of the most striking examples of medieval military architecture in South Tyrol.

Walking along the river, you can admire the fortress still watching over the village, just as it did in ancient times.
