Racines is one of South Tyrol’s largest municipalities and is home to three extraordinary valleys: Val Ridanna, Val Giovo and Val Racines. Val Ridanna: The Mining Heart of the Alps
Located west of Vipiteno, Val Ridanna winds between the peaks of the Breonie Alps and boasts eight centuries of mining history. This important chapter of local heritage is now brought to life through an engaging experience at the South Tyrol Mining Museum – Ridanna Monteneve, one of the most unique attractions in the region.
Fun fact: The Monteneve mines, situated at over 2,000 metres, were among the highest in Europe and can now be reached on guided tours that take you through tunnels and historic machinery.
Val Giovo: Between Silence and Alpine Views
Val Giovo connects Vipiteno with the Val Passiria via the Giovo Pass, one of South Tyrol’s highest and most spectacular mountain passes. This area is perfect for those seeking peace, scenic trails and authentic alpine atmosphere away from mass tourism.
The Giovo Pass is also a favourite route among cyclists for its technical challenge and breathtaking vistas.
Val Racines: A Paradise for Winter Sports
Val Racines, stretching from Stanghe toward the southwest, is one of the most popular ski areas in the region. Here you’ll find:
- 25 km of alpine ski slopes served by modern lifts
- 5 km toboggan run for both adults and children
- 40 km of cross-country ski trails winding through silent, snow-covered forests
In summer, the valley opens up to hikes among alpine huts and meadows, offering breathtaking mountain views.
Places Not to Miss in the Municipality of Racines
Stanghe
At 1,000 metres above sea level, Stanghe is famous for its spectacular Stanghe Waterfalls (Gilfenklamm), set between white marble walls and accessible via a fascinating equipped trail. Nearby stand the ruins of Reifenegg Castle, dating back to the 11th century.
The waterfalls are among the few in Europe that flow through a marble gorge — a stunning natural spectacle, especially after rain or snowmelt!
Mareta
Located at 1,050 metres, Mareta marks the gateway to Val Ridanna and is home to one of South Tyrol’s Baroque jewels: Wolfsthurn Castle, an elegant residence that today houses the South Tyrol Museum of Hunting and Fishing.
The castle is surrounded by a romantic park with centuries-old trees — perfect for a peaceful stroll in nature.
