Val d’Ultimo and Upper Val di Non: Two Valleys, One Authentic Alpine Soul

The Val d’Ultimo stretches for 40 kilometres, from the high peaks of Fontana Bianca — where the Valsura stream originates — to the narrow Ronzino valley, not far from Lana. It is considered one of the most fascinating valleys in South Tyrol, where nature, history, and culture blend in an intimate and authentic atmosphere.

Among the best-known villages are San Pancrazio and the municipality of Ultimo, which includes the hamlets of Santa Gertrude, San Nicolò, Santa Valburga, and Pracupola. Thanks to the road opened in 1998, which connects Val d’Ultimo to the Upper Val di Non in just 20 minutes, you can now also visit the small and charming towns of San Felice, Lauregno, Senale, and Proves, once difficult to reach.

A Past Rooted in the Middle Ages

The area’s origins date back to the 6th century AD, when it was conquered first by the Goths and later by the Bavarians. During the Middle Ages, many settlements were fiefs of the Abbey of Weingarten, based in Regensburg. These lands were later granted to farmers, giving rise to a valley still deeply connected to its rural and alpine traditions.
