Just 2 km from the Palade Pass, nestled at an altitude of 1,342 metres, lies Senale, the oldest settlement in the Upper Val di Non. This small, enchanting village, surrounded by peaceful forests and immersed in authentic nature, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, attracting visitors from all over Tyrol.
The Sanctuary of Senale: The Spiritual Heart of the Alps
The main attraction of Senale is undoubtedly its Marian sanctuary — a building rich in history and charm that welcomes pilgrims, travellers, and lovers of sacred art every year.
A Millenary Convent
As early as 1194, historical documents mention the presence of a pilgrims’ hospice managed by the convent, serving those who crossed the Palade Pass. By 1224, the convent was under the care of the Augustinian Order. Today, the complex belongs to the Benedictine Abbey of Muri-Gries in Bolzano.
Architecture Between Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque
The building showcases architectural styles and details from various eras:
- Romanesque bell tower with a square roof
- Gothic restorations carried out in the 15th century
- Interiors decorated with sumptuous Baroque altars
- On the main altar, a precious Rococo shrine houses the venerated image of the Madonna and Child
