Merano and surroundings

Merano and Surroundings: Nature, Culture and Adventure in the Heart of South Tyrol

In the heart of South Tyrol, the Merano and Surroundings (Meraner Land) holiday region stretches between valleys, vineyards, glaciers and ancient villages, offering a landscape full of contrasts and charm in every season. This area is part of the Burgraviato, a district named after the historic County of the Lords of Tyrol, with Merano as its elegant spa capital.

A Region to Discover

The Meraner Land borders:

  • to the west with Val Venosta,
  • to the south with the South Tyrolean Lowlands,
  • to the north-east with the Isarco Valley.

The holiday area includes extraordinary destinations such as Avelengo-Verano, Cermes, Lana, Marlengo, Nalles, Naturno-Plaus, Parcines, Scena, Tesimo-Prissiano, the Val d’Ultimo and Alta Val di Non, the Val Passiria and the Val Senales, as well as Merano itself.

From the fertile expanses of apple orchards and vineyards in the valley to the peaks soaring beyond 3,000 metres, this region offers spectacular views and the chance to enjoy unique experiences: in summer, you can ski in the morning on the Val Senales glacier and take a swim in Merano’s pools in the afternoon.

Between History and Famous Visitors

Inhabited since ancient times, the Merano region has long attracted distinguished guests such as the beloved Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi, and the poet Ezra Pound. Traces of its past can be found everywhere: castles, Romanesque churches, museums and historic villages that have preserved their timeless charm.

Summer Activities in Nature

In summer, the area offers activities for all ages and fitness levels:

  • Hiking in natural parks
  • Nordic walking through forests and scenic trails
  • Rafting and climbing for the more adventurous
  • Horseback and carriage rides for those who enjoy romance and relaxation
  • Cycling itineraries through orchards, vineyards and alpine pastures
  • Hang gliding to admire the mountains from above

Golf lovers can enjoy two beautiful courses: the Golfclub Passeier. Meran in San Leonardo (18 holes) and the Golfclub Gutshof Brandis in Lana (9 holes).

Winter on the Slopes

In winter, the Merano region becomes a snowy paradise with seven modern and well-equipped ski areas, perfect for skiers of every level.

Merano 2000

Just a few minutes from the city, Merano 2000 is one of the most popular destinations for families. With its 8 lifts and 40 km of slopes, it offers plenty of fun, breathtaking views of the Dolomites and numerous activities for children.

Lagundo and Tirolo: Villages of Nature and Tradition

Lagundo

Divided into six hamlets – Lagundo di Sopra, Lagundo Riomolino, Plars di Mezzo, Plars di Sopra, Foresta and Velloi – this charming village overlooking Merano is surrounded by vineyards and orchards. It’s the perfect starting point for excursions in the Tessa Group Nature Park, including the famous Lagundo Waalweg, one of the most beloved irrigation trails.

Tirolo

Nestled between the valley floor and the peaks of the Monte di Merano up to the Laghi di Sopranes (2,500 m), Tirolo offers spectacular alpine scenery. It was this very landscape that captivated Empress Sissi, who loved to walk among these mountains.

The Waale: The Agricultural Soul of the Land

The Waale are ancient irrigation channels once used by farmers to bring water to their fields in this dry region. Built from streams flowing down side valleys, the water was guided through earthen ditches, stone channels or wooden conduits called “Kandeln”, designed to cross even the steepest slopes.

Today, many channels have been replaced by modern systems, but some Waale are still in use, and their maintenance paths have become scenic, relaxing walks loved by both visitors and locals.

Merano and Surroundings: The Perfect Year-Round Destination

Whether you visit in summer or winter, Merano and its valleys will surprise you with their diverse landscapes, rich culture and warm hospitality. You can choose between the comfort of an elegant spa town, the tranquillity of authentic villages, the thrill of snow-covered peaks or the beauty of blossoming apple orchards. A place where every season is an invitation to return.
