The Kränzel Estate Maze Garden: A unique sensory experience in Cermes
Imagine a place where every step is an invitation to explore, where nature blends with art and time stands still. Welcome to the Kränzel Estate Maze Garden in Cermes, near Merano — a corner of South Tyrol where history, wine and creativity intertwine in fascinating ways.
The garden was created in 2003, not from a defined plan but from a deep intuition. More than just a garden, it is a living work of art, constantly evolving — designed to move you, surprise you and make you reflect.
A journey through history
The Kränzelhof Estate has deep historical roots: the first document mentioning it dates back to 1182, when the landowners made a donation to the Füssen Foundation in Bavaria. For over 400 years, this agricultural estate has been an economic landmark for the Cermes area.
Today it extends over 6 hectares of vineyards located between 300 and 600 metres above sea level, producing elegant white and red wines — which can also be purchased on site.
What to see in the Maze Garden
The seven gardens offer a unique experience, surrounded by art and nature.
The Wooden House
Built from local larch wood, it welcomes you at the entrance to the garden. Here you can buy the estate’s wines and entrance tickets. Nearby, follow the path through mulberry trees and mysterious forks in the trail.
The Four Gardens
- Chestnut Garden
- Garden of Eternal Rest
- Fruit Garden
- Dogwood Grove
Each has its own atmosphere, scents and messages.
The Spiral Maze
A path built on an embankment, paved with stone slabs and filled with the scent of thyme — walking through it is a sensory experience.
The Green Hall and the Sculpture
The central terrace, called the “Green Hall,” leads to the heart of the maze, where you’re greeted by a 9-metre-high sculpture by artist Franz Stähler — a powerful symbol of introspection.
The Grand Maze
Designed by Gernot Candolini, a master of symbolic labyrinth design, it covers 3,300 m² with a path stretching 1,500 metres, framed by ten varieties of espalier-trained vines.
The Theatre
Climb the 13 steps to reach a natural amphitheatre with 300 seats. From here, the view over the Merano basin is simply breathtaking.
The Rest Area
A small paradise for families, with a shaded space among the larches and a playground for children.
The New Garden
Currently under development, it will include a stream, an orchard and a meadow for seminars and workshops — confirming the estate’s vocation as a place for body, mind and soul.
