Nalles: Between Ancient History, Romantic Blossoms and Flavours of the Adige Valley

Nalles, the southernmost municipality of the Burgraviato, welcomes you to the heart of the sunny Adige Valley, halfway between Merano and Bolzano, along the historic Wine Road and close to the Via Claudia Augusta cycle path. It’s a small rural gem where time moves slowly among flowering orchards, silent castles and rose-scented trails.

A Landscape that Changes with Altitude

The territory of Nalles stretches between 300 and 1,000 metres above sea level, including the hamlets of Upper and Lower Sirmiano. At higher altitudes, life revolves around livestock, forests and berries, while in the valley floor, apples and vineyards dominate the scenery with vivid, changing colours.

Fun fact: until 1964, Lower Sirmiano belonged to the neighbouring municipality of Tesimo!

A History Spanning Over Two Millennia

With pre-Roman origins, Nalles is one of the oldest settlements in South Tyrol. The first written mention dates back to the year 830, in the records of the Monastery of St. Gall in Switzerland. According to some theories, its name means “river port”, recalling the ancient navigation on the Adige River that once began here.

Among Churches, Castles and… Roses

Nalles is also known as “the village of roses”, thanks to its springtime blooms that fill every corner with colour, fragrance and beauty. The village is home to numerous churches rich in art and spirituality, as well as castles that tell stories of nobles, wars and ancient South Tyrolean families.

A Remarkable Local Figure

This peaceful and charming village was the birthplace of Father Gregor Gasser, a prominent figure known for his advocacy for youth and workers, a cultured and passionate man who left a lasting mark on local history.

Nalles is a place of hidden churches and castles, surrounded by genuine aromas and flavours. Don’t miss the blooming season and discover the magic of the “village of roses”!
