Avelengo and Verano: Between horses, peaks and postcard-perfect views
Suspended between ancient woods, blooming meadows and clear skies, Avelengo and Verano are two South Tyrolean gems overlooking the town of Merano like natural terraces. Places where nature meets the most authentic Alpine culture — among pastures, mountain huts, horses and breathtaking views.
Avelengo, homeland of the Haflinger horse
Located on the sunny Tschöggelberg Plateau, between 1,200 and 2,500 metres above sea level, Avelengo is known as the birthplace of the famous Haflinger horse: blond mane, sure-footed stride, noble spirit. This splendid animal, which also appears on the municipal coat of arms alongside a conifer tree, embodies the strong yet gentle spirit of the mountain people.
The hamlets of Avelengo: Villages and nature
- Santa Caterina: home to a charming Romanesque chapel with a Gothic apse, set in serene Alpine surroundings.
- Avelengo Paese: the vibrant heart of the municipality, featuring the Parish Church dedicated to St. John and a Gothic tabernacle along Locherweg Street.
- Avelengo di Sopra: the only compact hamlet, offering open views of the Tessa Group mountain range.
- Falzeben: the starting point for outdoor adventures thanks to the Merano 2000 ski area — ideal in winter and a hiking paradise in summer.
Verano, the small treasure of the Monzoccolo Plateau
Just a few kilometres from Avelengo, Verano rests at 1,204 m a.s.l. on the Monzoccolo Plateau, surrounded by the villages of Meltina and Postal. Easily reached by the Postal cable car, Verano offers a world of tranquillity and unique vistas.
What to see in Verano
- The mysterious Red Stones, round red tuff formations considered unique in Europe.
- The thatched roofs of historic farmsteads, a legacy of the Bavarii people, visible at the old Spitzegerhof, Tötnmoarhof, Langtratterhof and Gfrar farms.
- The hamlets of Eschio, Hinterkofl, Unterdorf and the Leadner Alm, perfect for walking, relaxing and enjoying local flavours.
Avelengo and Verano are places suspended between earth and sky, where time seems to slow down and each season reveals a new shade of beauty. Whether you come for an active holiday, a scenic hike or simply to enjoy the peace of the meadows and the scent of the forests, here you’ll find an authentic South Tyrolean experience — full of tradition, nature and wonder.
