The Haflinger horses: From South Tyrol to the hearts of families
With their unmistakable blond manes, gentle gaze and compact build, the Haflinger horses – known in Italian as cavalli avelignesi – are among the most beloved horse breeds in South Tyrol. Originating from the municipality of Avelengo, these horses stand out for their docile temperament, physical strength and deep bond with humans, making them ideal companions for life and outdoor activities.
The origins of the Haflinger horse
It all began in 1874, when breeder Josef Folie, a pioneer in horse selection, crossed an Oriental stallion (133 El Bedavi XXII) with a Galician mare. The first specimen of the breed was born — a colt named 249 Folie. His strong build, sure-footed gait, sloping shoulders and cooperative temperament immediately won over local breeders, especially the farmers of Avelengo and the Monzoccolo Plateau.
In 1898, the Haflinger horse was officially recognized by the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture, establishing itself as one of the most iconic breeds of the Alpine region.
From farm work to equestrian tourism
Originally bred as draft and farm horses, today the Haflingers play a starring role in many activities — especially sporting and tourist ones. Their versatility makes them perfect for:
- Horseback riding and mountain trekking
- Show jumping and endurance
- Skijöring in winter
- Western riding
- And above all, for equine therapy, thanks to their gentle and reassuring nature.
Although they are known for their friendly temperament, not every Haflinger is automatically suitable for children or beginners. As with any animal, much depends on their training, environment and the expertise of the trainer. However, when properly cared for, they can offer a unique experience of connection, play and trust.
The Haflinger horses represent not only a genetic and cultural heritage of South Tyrol, but also a living bridge between past and present. Whether you want to ride them through the woods or simply watch them roam freely in the pastures of Avelengo, you’ll be captivated by this noble, gentle and deeply rooted breed.
