Dobbiaco

Dobbiaco: Between the Three Peaks and the energy of nature

Located at an altitude of 1,256 meters, Dobbiaco is one of the most fascinating destinations in Alta Pusteria. Its strategic position at the entrance to the Valle di Landro offers spectacular views of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, earning it the name “Municipality of the Three Peaks.” Its proximity to San Candido and Cortina d’Ampezzo, together with its healthy climate, make Dobbiaco a perfect year-round destination.

Music, art, and tradition: Culture to experience

Dobbiaco is a landmark for classical music, thanks to the renowned Gustav Mahler Music Weeks, which attract enthusiasts from all over Europe every summer. The Bohemian composer stayed here, inspired by the peace and beauty of the surrounding nature.

Beyond that, the village preserves many historical sites of great charm, such as the Herbst Castle, the Shrine of Santa Maria, and several ancient farmsteads and chapels. But it is above all the oldest Way of the Cross in Tyrol that reveals the deepest soul of Dobbiaco. Also known as the Calvary Hill, it begins at the southern exit of the cemetery and ends at the round chapel of Lerschach, consecrated in 1568.

The five shrines along the route were commissioned in 1519 by the brothers Christoph and Kaspar Herbst. The scenes of the Passion are represented by plaster reliefs, and the entire path measures 1,200 feet — the same length as the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. A spiritual and artistic journey through the heart of the village, amid silence, faith, and memory.

Nature and parks: Between Dolomites and Central Alps

Dobbiaco lies between two extraordinary nature parks:

To the north rise the Central Alps, and to the south, the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, nature takes center stage — every trail is an invitation to adventure.

Sports for every season

Dobbiaco is the paradise of cross-country skiing, thanks to the impressive Nordic Arena, host to international marathons and World Cup races.

In winter, you can enjoy countless activities: cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ski mountaineering, and ice skating. In summer, the colorful landscapes provide the ideal setting for hiking and walking, road cycling and mountain biking, climbing, sport fishing, tennis, and athletics competitions — often featuring national and international athletes.

Water: Resource, symbol, and beauty

One of Dobbiaco’s defining features is its abundance of water sources. The town lies on the watershed between the Danube and Adige river basins, drawing from two aquifers: one dolomitic and one iron-rich, originating from the Central Alps.

Since ancient times, water has been harnessed to power mills, and today it is used to produce hydroelectric energy through cutting-edge facilities.

Don’t miss a visit to Lake Dobbiaco or Lake Landro — enchanting bodies of water perfect for family walks, picnics, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet.

Dobbiaco is a perfect blend of culture, sport, and nature — a place where every season has its story to tell. Whether you seek excitement or serene beauty, you’ll find your own rhythm here.
