The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle: A Botanical Journey in the Heart of Merano
Just a few minutes from the centre of Merano, the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle await you with an explosion of nature, beauty and surprises. Spanning 12 hectares shaped like a natural amphitheatre, these gardens offer unique views of the surrounding mountains and take you on a true botanical journey around the world.
A World Divided into Four Thematic Areas

The Forests of the World
Stroll among majestic trees from every corner of the globe: evergreen broadleaf species from China, Japan and Florida, giant sequoias from North America, and bald cypresses from the Mississippi region. Don’t miss the evocative Fern Valley and the aviary hosting colourful exotic parrots.

The Sun Gardens
Under the South Tyrolean sun, you’ll discover Italy’s northernmost olive grove, home to a 700-year-old olive tree! Among fragrant lavender, a collection of 154 sage varieties, and a hillside dotted with cacti and aloe plants, you’ll feel as though you’re crossing Mediterranean and desert landscapes — without ever leaving Merano.
The Landscapes of South Tyrol
This section reveals the most authentic side of the region: oak forests, wetlands typical of the valley floors, vineyards and orchards. Fun fact: here grows the Versoaln vine, the largest (and perhaps oldest) grapevine in the world, originally from Katzenzungen Castle.
The Water and Terraced Gardens
Panoramic terraces, stairways and gentle streams lead you to the romantic Water Lily Pond, passing through elegant Italian and English gardens and a lush palm grove. A peaceful corner where water and flowers dance together.
Perfect for families, couples and nature lovers, this place hosts numerous events and activities that will take your breath away. Let yourself be enchanted by the beauty and fragrance of this magnificent garden, where rare plants create a picture-perfect landscape.
