Merano Thermal Baths: Wellbeing Amid Nature and Imperial History
In the heart of South Tyrol, Merano has long been synonymous with wellness, relaxation and fresh mountain air. The Merano Thermal Baths, inaugurated in 2005, represent the modern evolution of this century-old tradition: a contemporary oasis surrounded by greenery, where body and mind find perfect harmony.
An Architectural Masterpiece in the Green
Designed by architect Matteo Thun, the complex is an elegant glass-and-steel cube set within a 50,000-square-metre park. Palm trees, century-old oaks, fragrant rose gardens and mountain views create a dreamlike backdrop. The transparent structure seamlessly connects the indoors and outdoors, making every moment at the spa an experience in total harmony with nature.
25 Pools for Every Desire
At the Merano Thermal Baths, you’ll find 25 pools (13 indoor and 12 outdoor), each designed for relaxation and regeneration. Highlights include:
- Saltwater pool
- Pools with radon-enriched water
- 240 m² lap pool
- Kneipp pools
- Counter-current pool
A complete experience that combines relaxation, prevention and therapeutic wellbeing.
Spa & Vital: South Tyrolean Treatments
In the Spa & Vital area — featuring 26 minimalist rooms in dark wood — you’ll find treatments that celebrate South Tyrol’s natural products: apple, grape, hay, wool, whey and chestnut.
Each treatment is designed to offer a deep sense of renewal, wrapped in the scents and colours of the local landscape.
Merano: A Spa Town Since the 1800s
Merano’s spa tradition dates back to the 19th century. It was Viennese Countess Mathilde von Schwarzenberg who, in 1836, first discovered the benefits of its mild climate. From then on, the town evolved from a destination for treating tuberculosis into a holiday retreat for Europe’s nobility.
Thanks to Mayor Valentin Haller and the opening of the Brenner Railway, Merano became one of the most sought-after destinations in Europe. During the Belle Époque, with its luxury hotels, theatres and the famous Kurhaus, the town turned into a refined social hub.
The arrival of Empress Sissi sealed its allure: she stayed at Trauttmansdorff Castle and, with her presence, made it even more renowned.
Radon Water: The Discovery that Changed Everything
After the post-war decline, the discovery of radon-rich thermal water in 1933 brought Merano back to prominence — this time as a modern spa resort. This water, sourced from Mount San Vigilio, is still used today in treatments that benefit the respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems.
Whether you’re seeking a moment of pure relaxation, a regenerating treatment or simply a place to slow down and reconnect with yourself, the Merano Thermal Baths are the perfect choice. Here, wellbeing tradition meets modern elegance in an atmosphere that will pamper you in every season. An experience to enjoy at least once in a lifetime — and to remember forever.
