Walks in Merano: The Most Beautiful Trails Amid Nature, History and Dreamlike Views
Merano is a true paradise for walkers. Its historic promenades, surrounded by greenery and tranquillity, offer the perfect opportunity to connect with nature and be enchanted by charming views, art and traces of imperial elegance.
Passer Promenade: Elegance and History
The Passer Promenade is Merano’s most famous and traditional walkway. Built in the 19th century, it runs along the right bank of the Passer River between the Post Bridge and the Theatre Bridge, directly opposite the modern Merano Thermal Baths.
You’ll stroll among flowerbeds, palm trees and sculpted hedges, passing in front of the majestic Kurhaus, a symbol of the Belle Époque. Continuing eastward, the route naturally leads to the Winter Promenade.
Summer Promenade: Cool Shade Along the Passer
Located on the left bank of the Passer, the Summer Promenade is perfect for warmer days. Giant sequoias, cedars of Lebanon, palm trees and pines form a cool natural tunnel, ideal for a refreshing break.
At the entrance, you’ll find the Empress Elisabeth Park, dedicated to Sissi, who stayed in Merano in 1870. In the heart of the park stands her statue — sculpted by Hermann Klotz — watching silently over the river, surrounded by greenery and history.
Winter Promenade: Warmth and Romance All Year Round
Designed to be sunny and sheltered from the wind, the Winter Promenade runs along the right bank of the Passer, from the Post Bridge to the Roman Bridge.
At the beginning of the path, you’ll find the enchanting Wandelhalle, a Liberty-style colonnade built in 1889, once used for concerts and exhibitions. Even in winter, the atmosphere here remains cosy and poetic.
Gilf Promenade: Between Rock and Exotic Nature
An unusual and evocative walk, the Gilf Promenade leads you along a path of wild charm, enriched by subtropical vegetation that surprises in every season. The trail heads towards Mount San Zeno and reaches Ortenstein Tower, also known as the “Gunpowder Tower”, offering spectacular views over Merano.
Tappeiner Promenade: One of Europe’s Most Beautiful Walks
The Tappeiner Promenade is the jewel among Merano’s trails. Four kilometres long, it winds along the mountain above the town, blending Alpine and Mediterranean flora in a rare and fascinating combination.
The route starts at the Parish Church of Merano and ends in the hamlet of Quarazze, offering open views over the town, orchards and surrounding mountains — a truly unmissable experience!
Falkner Promenade: High Above Tyrol Castle
If you’re seeking higher ground and greater peace, the Falkner Promenade, near Tyrol Castle, is ideal. It was created by Hans Norman Falkner, an Austrian who fell in love with these places.
The path winds among vineyards and slopes, offering breathtaking views of Merano, San Pietro and Thurnstein Castle.
