Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park: Between water and rock

Located between the Passiria Valley to the east and the Senales Valley to the west, the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park covers over 33,000 hectares, embracing the entire Tessa Mountain Group. The park is characterized by the presence of water in all its forms: from perennial glaciers to the spectacular Parcines Waterfalls, to the picturesque Sopranes Lakes. A vast and fascinating territory, offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes, wildlife, and climates, perfect for lovers of hiking and unspoiled nature.

The rocks turn white and red

The geology of the park is particularly fascinating. The peaks and slopes show a strong presence of marble, mostly granite, which varies from reddish to lighter tones, while the presence of numerous glaciers contrasts with the pure white snow and the sparkle of ice. This creates an imposing and evocative mountain landscape that captivates its visitors.

It is interesting to note that during the Ice Age, the entire area was covered by a thick ice cap, later divided into several glaciers. The most famous and largest is Niederjoch.

An extraordinary historical event marks this area significantly: in 1991, the mummy of Ötzi, the Iceman, was found on Mount Similaun, perfectly preserved for over 5,000 years due to the permafrost. A unique and overwhelming discovery that forever marked the world of anthropology and archaeology.

Parcines Waterfalls: A natural spectacle

One of the most iconic spots in the park is the Parcines Waterfall, the highest in South Tyrol, with a drop of 97 meters. During the snowmelt season or after heavy rains, the water flow can reach 6,000 liters per second, representing the incredible power of nature.

When sunlight hits the droplets suspended in the air, it creates stunning rainbows, offering visitors a breathtaking show. To reach the waterfall, an 8 km moderately difficult hike is available, allowing you to enjoy enchanting views along the way.

Sopranes Lakes: The largest alpine lake complex

Among the park’s most representative features are the Sopranes Lakes, a complex of 10 glacial lakes, the largest in the Alps. The largest is Lake Lungo, with a length of 1 km and a width of 300 meters. Next to it, the picturesque Lake Verde captivates with its intense coloring, reflecting the surrounding vegetation. Among the smaller lakes, Lake di Latte stands out for its milky tones.

The hiking trail that crosses the lakes is challenging, but the beauty of the panoramas makes every effort worthwhile, in an environment filled with magic and serenity.

Trails and hikes in the park

There are numerous hiking opportunities, suitable for all levels of experience. Among the most iconic trails:

Alta Via di Merano: a circular trail of about 95 km that circles the entire Tessa Mountain Group. Typically divided into multiple days of hiking, the trail reaches its highest point at Passo Gelato (2,895 m) and offers panoramic views of the Sarntal Alps in the southern section.

Belprato Loop - Lake of the Alp: an 8 km hike leading to the picturesque Seeber See (Lake of the Alp), nestled between Monte Scabro (2,926 m) and Monte Re (3,050 m).

Nature Trail in the Senales Valley: a 5 km educational trail with informative installations about local wildlife, agriculture, and legends of the area. The starting point is the parking lot of Maso Vorderkaser.

Flora and fauna: A rich and varied ecosystem

The park’s habitat hosts extraordinary biodiversity. Among reptiles, the asp viper stands out, having adapted even to high altitudes, while mammals such as ibexes, chamois, and marmots populate the more rugged areas. Birdwatching enthusiasts will be able to spot golden eagles, falcons, and woodpeckers in an enchanting display of unspoiled nature.

The vegetation varies depending on altitude: junipers and shrubs dominate the drier areas, while at lower altitudes, red firs, beeches, oaks, and chestnuts are found. Larch trees, with their deep roots, help stabilize the steeper slopes, all in a surprising balance and harmony.

The visitor center in Naturno: A journey into water

The Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park’s visitor center spans an area of 600 square meters and offers an interactive exhibition on the central theme of water. Visitors can explore 3D models of glaciers, learn about the water cycle, and discover the adaptations of local flora and fauna. Multimedia installations show, for example, the effects of a mudslide. Recently renovated in 2024, the center is an ideal starting point to learn about the park before venturing into its trails.
