Maranza: The Sun Terrace of South Tyrol
At an altitude of 1,414 metres, perched on a plateau overlooking the Valle Isarco, Maranza — or Meransen in German — is a small alpine gem known as the “sun terrace” of South Tyrol. Thanks to its southern exposure, this village enjoys over 280 days of sunshine each year, making it an ideal destination in every season.

Dominated by the silhouette of Mount Gitschberg, easily reached by a modern cable car that departs directly from the village, Maranza offers breathtaking views, pure mountain air, and the perfect mix of nature, culture, and spirituality.
What to See in Maranza: Between Faith, History and Legend

The Parish Church of St. James and the Three Holy Virgins
This elegant Baroque church, located in the heart of the village, is one of Maranza’s architectural symbols. Its late-Gothic bell tower, dating back to 1472, rises gracefully against the mountain backdrop, while the interior welcomes visitors with period decorations and a peaceful atmosphere.
Jungfrauenrast: The Resting Place of the Three Virgins
Just a short walk from the centre, along the Linden Path, lies the Jungfrauenrast — literally “the rest of the virgins.” Here you’ll find:
- A small spring
- The remains of an ancient tree trunk
- A bas-relief by Friedrich Gurschaler, replacing an old fresco dedicated to the Three Holy Virgins
According to legend, three virgins fled from Attila, King of the Huns, and found refuge here, resting before reaching the sanctuary — a story that still moves and fascinates visitors today.
The Linden Path
This evocative porphyry-paved trail is an ancient route known since Rhaetian times, linking Rio Pusteria to Maranza. It forms part of a pilgrimage route leading to the Shrine of the Three Virgins, under the protection of St. James.
Along the way you’ll find wayside shrines with sacred depictions, scenic viewpoints over the valley, and an atmosphere of reflection that accompanies every step.
A Destination for Every Season

Beyond its cultural and historical heritage, Maranza is a perfect destination for hikers and nature lovers:
- In summer, it offers lush hiking trails, panoramic alpine huts, and activities for the whole family.
- In winter, it is part of the Ski & Alpine Pastures holiday area, featuring ski slopes, toboggan runs, and postcard-perfect snowy landscapes.
The cable car to Gitschberg departs directly from the village: in just a few minutes you’ll be at 2,500 metres, enjoying a 360° view of the Dolomites and the Central Alps!
