Perca: Nature, Silence, and Traces of Ancient History

Just 5 km from Brunico, nestled among lush alpine pastures and bordered by the Rienza River, the small village of Perca (972 m a.s.l.) is a peaceful corner of the Puster Valley that captivates visitors with its authenticity and beauty. Surrounded by the hamlets of Vila, Vila di Sopra, Plata, and Tesselberg, it offers panoramic views and a truly mountain atmosphere.

Between Roman Roots and Untouched Landscapes

A milestone without inscription, located in front of the parish church, bears witness to the presence of the Roman Empire. The origins of the local place names, however, date back to the Bavarian settlers of the 9th century: Perca derives from “Perchah,” meaning “mountain stream” or “birch forest,” while Vila comes from “Woulinbah,” meaning “rushing brook.”

Today, Perca is the perfect destination for those seeking peace, nature walks, and postcard-worthy scenery. Just steps from the village lies the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park, a protected oasis where flora and fauna reveal their full splendor. From here, you can also reach the fascinating earth pyramids, remarkable natural formations located between 1,550 and 1,750 meters of altitude.

In winter, snow lovers can easily access the Plan de Corones ski area, one of the most renowned resorts in South Tyrol.

The Churches of Perca: A Heritage of Art and Devotion

Perca preserves a small yet precious sacred heritage that tells centuries of history and faith:

  • Parish Church of San Cassiano: built in late Gothic style and completed in 1525, its façade features a fresco of Saint Christopher. It suffered damage during World War II due to bombing.
  • Church of Nessano: dedicated to Saint James, it was built in 1474. Also in late Gothic style, it stands just outside the village center.
  • Church of Vila di Sopra: constructed in 1523 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas, it is notable for its pyramid-roofed bell tower.
  • Lercher Chapel: located at the entrance to Vila di Sopra, it dates back to 1673 and is adorned with charming grotesque decorations.

Perca is an authentic destination for those seeking to recharge in nature, walk among silent peaks, breathe pure air, and be embraced by a history that unfolds step by step. A small gem to be discovered slowly, in the green heart of South Tyrol.
