Valdaora: Hikes, culture and breathtaking views

Valdaora stretches between 981 and 2,567 meters above sea level and includes four hamlets: Valdaora di Mezzo, Valdaora di Sopra, Valdaora di Sotto and Sorafurcia. The first three villages lie on a flat area, while Sorafurcia climbs up the slope of Plan de Corones, one of South Tyrol’s most beloved ski resorts.

Located between Brunico and Monguelfo, in the heart of the Val Pusteria, Valdaora is an ideal destination in every season. Its privileged position, nestled between the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park, makes it perfect for hikes in unspoiled nature, among meadows, forests and majestic peaks such as Piz da Peres and Punta Tre Dita. The productive past linked to lime production and the presence of local thermal baths tell a long story of wellbeing and craftsmanship.

The hamlets: Between spirituality, landscapes and sports

Valdaora di Mezzo (1,048 m a.s.l.) is the main hamlet, the vibrant heart of the municipality. Not to be missed is the Parish Church of St. Egidio, which preserves valuable works by Michael Pacher and his pupil Simon von Taisten, as well as the monument to Peter Sigmayr, a Tyrolean patriot born right here.

Valdaora di Sopra (1,080 m a.s.l.) is the easternmost hamlet, known for its Church of St. Mary, dating back to the 15th century, and for the picturesque artificial lake of Valdaora, which attracts anglers and nature lovers in search of tranquility.

Valdaora di Sotto (1,024 m a.s.l.) enchants with its Parish Church, featuring an altar by Michael Rasner and a depiction of the Martyrdom of St. Agnes occupying the center of the nave.

Sorafurcia (1,344 m a.s.l.) is the perfect hamlet for ski enthusiasts. From Gassl, just a short distance away, the gondola lift to Plan de Corones departs, providing access to one of the most renowned ski areas in the Dolomites.
