Monguelfo and Tesido: Art and sacred heritage in Alta Pusteria
Monguelfo, a village of art and memory
Monguelfo, lying at 1,087 m a.s.l. along the road leading into Alta Pusteria, is a village of ancient origins. Findings dating back to the Bronze Age bear witness to the long history of human settlement in this strategic and fascinating valley.

Despite its small size, Monguelfo is a concentration of culture and spirituality, where every corner tells a story. Overlooking the village is the majestic Castel Welsperg, one of South Tyrol’s best-preserved castles, built on a rocky spur offering a unique view over the entire valley.
The historic center preserves an artistic heritage of great value: the Parish Church of St. Margaret, in Baroque style, houses works by two great masters, Paul Troger and Michael Pacher. Just a few steps away, the Rainkirche bears witness to the age-old devotion of the Welsperg family, while the St. Margaret’s Square shrine, built in 1460 to thank heaven after being spared from plague, fires and floods, preserves touching frescoes also attributed to Pacher.
Tesido and its history-rich churches
Equally fascinating is Tesido, a hamlet set on a natural terrace at the entrance to the Val Casies. Nestled in nature and far from the bustle of the valley, it’s the perfect place for those seeking peace and an authentic alpine atmosphere. The place name has Illyrian roots, proof of its ancient history.
In Tesido you can visit the Parish Church of Saints Ingenuin and Albuin, built in 1150 and altered over the centuries to its current Baroque form, and the Church of St. George, originally constructed as a fortification in the early Middle Ages. The votive shrine, with its pyramidal roof and captivating devotional frescoes, adds a poetic touch to an environment already steeped in faith and tradition.
Between spirituality, art and nature, Monguelfo and Tesido invite you to slow down, to listen to the stories carved in every stone and to be enveloped by the beauty of an authentic South Tyrol.
