Laces: Where History Meets the Peaks of South Tyrol
Located at an altitude of 639 meters in the heart of Val Venosta, the village of Laces is a true treasure chest of art and culture. Thanks to its strategic geographic position — at the crossroads between Val Venosta and Val d’Ultimo — and the fact that it was spared from many of the raids that struck nearby towns, it has preserved through the centuries a wealth of precious artistic masterpieces.
From the Waters of the Adige to a Climatic Haven
The name “Laces” comes from the Latin lacus, meaning “lake,” testifying to the fact that this area was once completely submerged by the waters of the Adige River.
Today, surrounded by greenery and kissed by the sun, Laces is considered an excellent climatic resort, renowned for its pure air and for the numerous hiking trails leading to panoramic peaks such as Cima Dodici, Cima Vermoi, Monte Tramontana, Niederjöchl, and Zerminger.
Hamlets Full of Hidden Gems
The municipality is made up of four charming hamlets: Tarres, San Martino al Monte, Morter, and Coldrano, all dotted with ancient churches, castles, and monuments that tell a millennia-old story. Each hamlet offers a unique glimpse into the culture and architecture typical of Val Venosta.
Resilient People and Ancient Traditions
The people of Laces are known for their tenacity and deep connection to their roots. A curious custom tells that, in the past, shepherds traveling toward Val Senales were allowed to stop only briefly, to prevent their livestock from grazing on local pastures.
One of the most deeply rooted traditions is the market held on March 17, once a central event in the town’s life. On that day, justice was administered, debts were settled, jobs were sought, and social ties were renewed.
A colorful anecdote recounts that laborers seeking work would wear a spoon on their hat like a plume, making them easily recognizable. It is also said that farmers from Val Martello would take advantage of the day to steal livestock and flirt with the women who had stayed home.
Today, this ancient tradition is celebrated symbolically but remains an important occasion for the local community.
Land of Apples and Agricultural Excellence
Beyond its cultural heritage, Laces is also one of the largest apple producers in all of Val Venosta. Its well-tended orchards stretch as far as the eye can see, producing crisp, fragrant fruit exported far beyond Italy’s borders.
Laces is a village that enchants with its authenticity, age-old traditions, and breathtaking alpine scenery. Perfect for those seeking a holiday filled with relaxation, culture, and the genuine flavors of South Tyrol.
