The village of Resia on Lake Resia

Resia: The Alpine Village with a Submerged Past

Nestled at about 1,500 meters above sea level, Resia (Ger. Reschen am See) is a hamlet of Curon Venosta in Upper Val Venosta and today stands among the most fascinating destinations in South Tyrol. Its name is known worldwide for Lake Resia and its iconic submerged bell tower, a silent symbol of a moving and mysterious past.

The Village Rising from the Lake

Until 1928, Resia was an independent municipality. Later, together with Vallelunga and San Valentino alla Muta, it was merged into Curon. Today, the name Resia refers to one of the hamlets of the municipality of Curon Venosta.

With the creation of an artificial lake in 1950, much of the village was submerged — as was the entire village of Curon. Only the bell tower of the old church was left standing, emerging solitary from the waters and becoming a symbol of remembrance and resilience. Today, this poignant scene attracts photographers, travelers, and sports enthusiasts eager to experience one of South Tyrol’s most iconic sights.

A 2–3 hour walk along the shore of Lake Resia connects Resia with San Valentino alla Muta, offering spectacular views of green meadows and turquoise waters.

An All-Year Destination

In both summer and winter, Resia is an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation, sports, and nature. In winter, the Belpiano–Malga San Valentino ski area offers perfectly groomed slopes for skiers of all levels. In summer, hiking or cycling along the Alta Via of Val Venosta or around the lake are truly unforgettable experiences.

A Dive into History: World War II Bunkers

Resia is not only about nature and sports — it’s also a place of historical memory. During World War II, several defensive fortifications were built here by Mussolini to protect the Italian border from possible Nazi invasions (Resia Pass Barrier and Pian dei Morti Barrier). Today, bunkers and anti-tank trenches remain visible, particularly in the area of the Resia Pass.

Since 2011, the Tourist Association of the Resia Pass has organized guided tours of bunker no. 20, near the source of the Adige River. Tours are held every Friday at 3:00 p.m. during July, August, and September, lasting about an hour and a half. It’s a perfect opportunity to combine nature and history in a walk with deep symbolic meaning.

Resia is a place that combines scenic beauty, historical emotion, and endless leisure opportunities. Whether you wish to admire the famous submerged bell tower, hike alpine trails, or uncover the secrets of World War II, here you’ll find a corner of South Tyrol that truly speaks to the heart.
