Val Martello: The Valley of Strawberries and Authentic Landscapes
Val Martello lies in the heart of the Stelvio National Park, between 900 and 1,800 meters above sea level. This side valley of Val Venosta is a true paradise for lovers of nature, genuine flavors, and tranquility, thanks to its dry and crisp climate — ideal for growing strawberries, famous throughout Europe, and vegetables such as radicchio.
In June, the valley hosts the Strawberry Festival, featuring food stalls, craft markets, and tastings. It’s the perfect opportunity to sample homemade desserts and jams, visit greenhouses, and discover local traditions.
The Plima River and the Echo of the Great Flood
The landscape of Val Martello is also shaped by the Plima River, fed by melting glaciers. In 1891, this river was the scene of a devastating flood that left a lasting mark on the valley. To prevent future disasters, a massive dam was built — still visible today — with a distinctive circular opening at its base to regulate the water flow.
A curious fact: the huge stone blocks used to construct the dam were transported with rudimentary tools and sheer human strength. Even today, people wonder how such a monumental feat was accomplished at that time.
Between History, Culture, and Outdoor Adventures
Val Martello offers more than nature: it also preserves ancient places of worship and a profound spiritual atmosphere. One such site is the Parish Church of Saint Walburga, dating back to 1203. Originally Romanesque, it still retains part of its bell tower and traces of lost frescoes, including one of Saint Christopher painted in 1557.
For trekking enthusiasts, the valley offers 220 km of well-marked trails suitable for all levels, winding through flowering meadows, ancient forests, and breathtaking alpine vistas. In winter, it transforms into a haven for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with peaceful trails far from the crowds.
Val Martello welcomes you with its soothing silence, its fruits of the land, and a nature that tells ancient stories. An authentic destination — perfect in every season.
