Val Venosta Malles

Malles: Between Ancient History, Spirituality, and Unique Natural Phenomena

Located in the heart of the Upper Val Venosta at an altitude of 1,050 meters, the municipality of Malles Venosta is the largest in the valley and the third largest in South Tyrol. Its hamlets — from Burgusio to Mazia, from Clusio to Planol — were once independent, but today they merge into a territory rich in culture, alpine architecture, and deep spirituality.

The Village of the Seven Towers

Once known as “Malles of the Seven Towers”, today five of them remain — silent guardians of a fascinating past. Among them stands out the Fröhlich Tower, part of the 12th-century castle of the same name. The few written records, such as the travel diary of Bianca Maria Sforza, describe Fröhlich Castle as a luxurious residence adorned with fine Tyrolean stube (wood-paneled rooms).

Monte Maria Abbey

The Abbey of Monte Maria and Its Religious Treasures

Among the area’s most precious gems is without doubt the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Maria, founded in the 12th century. Located in Burgusio, it is the highest active monastery in Europe. Its Romanesque crypt, decorated with a unique cycle of frescoes, is one of the must-see attractions for lovers of sacred art.

Another highlight is the Church of Saint Benedict, dating back to 800 AD. Surrounded by silence and time, it preserves ancient frescoes, including depictions of Pope Gregory the Great and Saint Stephen.

Planol and the Phenomenon of the Two Sunrises

Among the curiosities that make Malles truly unique is the picturesque village of Planol, located at 1,600 meters above sea level. Thanks to its position near the Spitzige Lun peak, visitors can witness a rare phenomenon: the sun rises and sets twice a day, disappearing briefly behind the summit before reappearing. This event creates surreal plays of light and atmosphere, especially in summer.

Although Planol has suffered several fires over the centuries, its charm remains intact. Its current architecture still reflects the traditional character of one of Val Venosta’s most authentic villages.

Between spirituality, nature, and legend, Malles is the perfect destination for those who seek relaxation, culture, and the wonders of nature. A place where time seems to have two sunrises and the past lives on in every stone.
