It is said that a woodcutter, while cutting a tree near the current sanctuary, heard a mysterious voice saying: “Cut if you must, but do not cut me.” Overcome by fear and wonder, he looked up and saw the face of the Virgin Mary among the branches. The spot immediately became a pilgrimage site, first marked by a simple wooden chapel, later replaced by the current stone church.
