Meltina: A Haven of Peace Suspended Between Sky and Earth

Meltina is one of those places that seem straight out of a postcard: a little gem set on the famous Montezoccolo, at an altitude of 1,140 meters, surrounded by larch forests, green meadows, and open views over the Adige Valley. This small municipality in the Garden of South Tyrol, which can also be reached by a panoramic funicular, includes the hamlets of Frassineto, Vallesina, and Salonetto.

Those seeking peace, nature, and authenticity will find everything they desire here. But Meltina is not just about tranquility: it is also a land of history, geological curiosities, and legends with roots deep in the past.

The Stone Men and the Earth Pyramids of Salto

Hiking enthusiasts will find around Meltina a true open-air paradise. One of the most scenic trails leads to the so-called Stone Men — mysterious stacks of stones placed on the rounded summit of the Hohe Reisch. In the past, they were used as trail markers, but legend has it that in the Middle Ages this site was also associated with witches and pagan rituals.

Adding even more charm to the Salto plateau are the earth pyramids, spectacular columns sculpted by erosion and topped with large stone caps. A natural phenomenon as rare as it is fascinating — one of the most striking in South Tyrol.

Between Fossils, Sparkling Wine, and Faith

Culture and scientific curiosity come together in Meltina’s Fossil Museum, where you can admire specimens dating back more than 260 million years, including plant remains from the Early Permian period that tell the story of an ancient, vanished landscape.

In this same village, in 1979, the highest sparkling wine cellar in South Tyrol was founded, taking advantage of its altitude and unique climate to produce exceptional bubbles.

Meltina also preserves a rich religious heritage, with churches and chapels scattered throughout the area, bearing witness to the deep spirituality of its inhabitants. Small artistic treasures waiting to be discovered on a walk through nature.
