The Burkhard Waterfalls: Wild Nature and Alpine History in Val Ridanna

In the heart of the Val Ridanna, nestled among dense forests and rocks shaped by time, the Burkhard Waterfalls offer one of South Tyrol’s most breathtaking natural spectacles. Two majestic cascades, fed by the Ferner stream, accompany you along a hike filled with panoramas, silence, and wonder.

A Trail of Bridges and Beauty

The path leading to the waterfalls is trail no. 9, starting from the well-known Mining World in Masseria. It winds along the lively Fernerbach stream, through centuries-old forests, offering sweeping views of the valley below.

Along the route, you will:

  • Pass by the Seebach hydroelectric power station at 1,610 metres above sea level
  • Cross charming wooden bridges suspended above deep gorges
  • Reach a panoramic point from which to admire the waterfalls in all their power

The roaring sound of the water, the scent of the forest, and the cool mountain air make this hike a multisensory experience — perfect for summer days.

A Trail Steeped in History

The path has ancient origins: it was built in early summer 1899 by innkeeper Stefan Haller, who dedicated it to Burkhard, the first president of the German and Austrian Alpine Association, naming it the “Burkhard-Klamm”.

It was inaugurated on 18 August 1899 and quickly became a favourite destination among mountain enthusiasts. Unfortunately, with the outbreak of the First World War, the trail was abandoned and fell into oblivion.

Only in 2006, thanks to the efforts of the Racines Tourist Association and the Forestry Department of the Vipiteno Inspectorate, was the route fully restored and reopened to the public.

Today, walking along this path also means reliving the Alpine passion of the late 19th century, when mountains began to fascinate explorers and travellers from across Europe.
