San Martino in Passiria: Art, nature and authenticity in the heart of the valley
San Martino in Passiria is the largest and most populated locality in the Val Passiria. Situated between the Passirio River and the mountain hamlet of Matatz, this charming village combines history, artistic treasures and unspoiled nature. Just 16 km from Merano, it is easy to reach and represents a perfect starting point for exploring the valley and the nearby Tessa Group Nature Park.
A village of sacred art and Nazarene painting
The spiritual and artistic symbol of the village is the Parish Church of San Martino, built in the 12th century, from which the municipality takes its name. Near the historic centre, visitors can also see the house that hosted the School of Painters of Val Passiria from 1719 to 1845.
Historical note: These painters followed the principles of the Nazarene style, an artistic movement inspired by Christian Renaissance art, reinterpreted in a romantic key. Their works adorned churches and buildings throughout Tyrol.
In 1854, with the death of Benedikt Auer, the school was dissolved, but the legacy it left behind remains clearly visible today.
Artistic treasures to discover
The Parish Church of San Martino houses masterpieces such as:
- “The Last Supper” by Nikolaus Auer
- “The Major” and “The Sacred Heart”, also by Auer
- “The Minor” and “The Adoration in Bethlehem” by Josef Haller
In addition, many house façades in the centre still display original frescoes from the painting school, turning the village into an authentic open-air museum.
