Rifiano and Caines: History, faith and nature on the edge of Val Passiria

Rifiano and Caines are two charming villages located at the entrance to Val Passiria, surrounded by a landscape of orchards, lush meadows and chestnut woods, just a short distance from the spa town of Merano and the Tessa Group Nature Park, the largest in South Tyrol.

These two small yet captivating villages represent the perfect blend of spirituality, culture and nature.

Rifiano: Faith, Baroque art and centuries-old frescoes

Rifiano is a renowned pilgrimage destination that welcomes numerous devotees every year. The spiritual heart of the village is the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1671 to a design by the architect Franz Delai, in an elegant Baroque style. Among its highlights are:

  • The Baroque high altar by Bartlmen Grätl, considered a true masterpiece
  • The 15th-century Pietà and the 12th-century baptismal font
  • The Chapel of Our Lady from 1425, with ribbed vaults and Gothic frescoes

The Marian devotion in Rifiano has been documented since 1310, when four bishops officially recognised the local cult. The plaster statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, originally kept in the chapel, was transferred to the shrine in 1749 to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. Today, it is placed at the centre of the high altar, above the tabernacle.

Caines: The smallest municipality in South Tyrol

Just a short distance from Rifiano, Caines is a true gem for those who love quiet nature and authenticity. Despite its small size, it offers a wide range of opportunities for anyone seeking a holiday surrounded by greenery and simplicity.

Things to do in Caines:

  • Hike among the vineyards and along the trails of the Tessa Group Nature Park
  • Visit the Tractor Museum, a fascinating collection that tells the story of local agriculture through beautifully restored vintage models

Caines is officially the smallest municipality in South Tyrol, but precisely for this reason it retains a warm and intimate atmosphere — perfect for those wishing to disconnect and immerse themselves in a slower, more genuine rhythm of life.

Rifiano and Caines are two ideal destinations for travellers seeking a spiritual, cultural or simply relaxing holiday at the gateway to Val Passiria.
