Plata: A corner of paradise among forests, lakes and centuries-old traditions
Located about 30 km from Merano, Plata is a small gem nestled in the Val Passiria, at the gateway to the Tessa Group Nature Park. This mountain village, surrounded by unspoiled nature, is perfect for those seeking peace, authenticity and breathtaking views.
Just 10 km from the Plan ski area, Plata welcomes you with fresh, revitalising air, ancient forests, crystal-clear lakes and a landscape that looks as if it has come straight out of a postcard.
Living traditions: Transhumance and the whip dance
One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Transhumance Festival, held in autumn when the herds return from the alpine pastures. It’s a special opportunity to experience South Tyrolean rural life up close, featuring parades, traditional costumes, local dishes and the thrilling whip dance (Goaßlschnölln) — an ancient performance that recalls the valley’s farming roots.
Natural wonders: Waterfalls and giant’s cauldrons
Plata is also the ideal starting point for visiting two truly unique natural attractions:
The Stulles Waterfalls
Just a few minutes from Plata are the twin waterfalls of Stulles, among the highest in Europe, with a spectacular double drop of over 100 metres. A powerful and beautiful sight, easily reached via a scenic hiking trail.
The Giant’s Cauldrons
Not far from the Untermagdfeld farm, you can admire a rare glacial phenomenon: 15 natural cavities carved by the glacier, known as “Giant’s Cauldrons.” The largest reaches 8 metres in depth and 7 in width. These are true natural sculptures, created by the swirling motion of water and debris during the Ice Age.
Plata is the perfect place to slow down, breathe and be amazed. Whether you want to walk through the woods, discover unique natural formations, or immerse yourself in a living and authentic tradition, this small village in Val Passiria will surprise and inspire you.
