Lake Carezza with turquoise water and views of the Latemar mountains, surrounded by forests and the Dolomites

Nova Levante and Carezza: Between legends, sports, and enchanted lakes

Traveling along the spectacular Dolomites Road (SS241), you’ll reach the Val d’Ega, where Nova Levante awaits — a picturesque village of about 2,000 inhabitants, located at 1,182 m a.s.l. at the foot of the Talt, the highest wooded hill in Europe (1,756 m). This area is perfect to explore on foot or by mountain bike, surrounded by unspoiled nature and breathtaking views.

A farming past with Ladin roots

The first historical mentions of the village date back to the second half of the 1100s under the name Noue, meaning “new land.” Nova Levante was founded by farmers from the Val di Fassa, who reclaimed these lands to live here year-round, close to their summer pastures. The community was originally Ladin and maintained this identity until the 1600s, when the language gradually shifted toward German.

Skiing, sledding, and snowy panoramas

In winter, Nova Levante is a perfect destination for snow lovers, thanks to two ski areas:

  • The Carezza-Karersee Ski Area, with 16 lifts and 40 km of slopes.
  • The Ski Center Latemar – Obereggen, for those who wish to explore even more terrain.

In addition to downhill skiing, you can enjoy toboggan runs, cross-country trails, and snowy paths through the forest.

Summer among lakes, trails, and UNESCO panoramas

With the warm season, the Dolomites burst into vibrant colors. Among the must-see stops is the Lake Carezza (1,620 m), one of the most beautiful alpine lakes. Its emerald-green waters reflect the peaks of the Catinaccio and Latemar, creating postcard-perfect views.

Between Nova Levante and Carezza, you can enjoy hiking, paragliding, golf, mountain biking, or simply relax in the village’s outdoor pool.

An intriguing fact? The spruce forests in this area are famous for their resonance wood, used by Venetian luthiers to craft fine violins.

The Enrosadira and the events of King Laurin

At sunset, get ready for a unique spectacle: the Enrosadira, the phenomenon that tints the Dolomites pink and violet. According to legend, it is the final spell of King Laurin, ruler of the hidden rose garden among these peaks.

Every September, don’t miss the King Laurin Alpine Huts Hike — a walk between the Rosengarten and Latemar, with culinary stops in old barns and traditional music along the way.

Carezza: Golf with a view of the Dolomites

Just a few kilometers from Nova Levante lies the hamlet of Carezza (1,069 m a.s.l.), famous for its alpine lake and one of the most scenic golf courses in Italy. The Carezza Golf Club, active since the early 1900s and once frequented by Austrian and British nobility, now offers:

  • Club House
  • Practice range
  • Driving range
  • 9-hole course (par 35) over a 3 km route
  • A panoramic terrace perfect for relaxing

Open from May to November, the course — redesigned by architect Marco Croze — is a modern reinterpretation of the original 18-hole layout and is suitable even for experienced players.

A fairytale holiday among forests, lakes, and legendary peaks

Nova Levante and Carezza are gateways to a magical world where every season has something to tell. From skiing to the Enrosadira, from lakes to legends, every corner of this land offers genuine emotions. If you’re looking for a holiday that combines nature, sports, culture, and relaxation, you’ll find far more than you expect here. And perhaps, as you watch the Catinaccio turn pink, you too will hear the echo of an ancient legend...
