Sella Group: Among Dolomite peaks and the Sellaronda
The Sella Group is one of the most iconic mountain ranges of the Dolomites, located between Val Gardena, Val Badia in South Tyrol, Val di Fassa in Trentino, and Livinallongo in Veneto. Thanks to its spectacular landscapes and strategic position, it is a destination appreciated in every season by mountain lovers — from hikers to skiers — drawn by the legendary Sellaronda, one of the most famous ski circuits in the Alps.
Peaks over 3,000 meters
The Sella Group features a high-altitude plateau crowned by its highest summit, Piz Boè (3,152 m), first climbed in 1864. Over the years, this mountain has witnessed the exploits of world-renowned alpinists, including Reinhold Messner, Günther Messner, Hans Kammerlander, and Hans Peter Eisendle.

Other noteworthy peaks include:
- Le Mésules (3,000 m)
- Cima Pisciadù (2,985 m)
- Sass Pordoi (2,950 m), famous for its panoramic terrace accessible by cable car
- Piz de Ciavazes (2,831 m)
- Piz da Lec (2,850 m)
- The Sella Towers, imposing and iconic Dolomite spires
Alpine lakes and rocky treks
The Sella Group is home to several alpine lakes, offering a fascinating contrast between rugged rocky landscapes and crystal-clear waters:
- Lago Pisciadù
- Lago del Drago
- Lago Boè
- Lago Ghiacciato
Among the most beautiful hikes in this area are the Via Ferrata Tridentina starting from Val Gardena — one of the most scenic in the Dolomites — and the ascent to Piz Boè, accessible via three main routes:
- From Passo Pordoi via the Normal Route, one of the most popular trails in the Dolomites
- From the Ossuary at Passo Pordoi via the Piazzetta Via Ferrata, one of the most challenging and spectacular in the area
- From Corvara, along a gentler yet equally scenic trail
The Sellaronda: The tour of the four passes
The Sellaronda is a circular route that loops around the Sella Group, crossing four alpine passes: Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Sella. In winter, it can be completed on skis thanks to an efficient network of lifts connecting the ski resorts of Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba, and Val di Fassa, for a total of 40 km of interconnected slopes.
In summer, the Sellaronda becomes a paradise for mountain bikers and hikers, offering trails and panoramic routes with breathtaking views of the Dolomites.
