Val Fiscalina: A jewel of the Dolomites between fairytale landscapes and historical memory
At about 1,400 m a.s.l., Val Fiscalina is one of the most enchanting valleys in South Tyrol and the gateway to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Nature Park, once known as the Sesto Dolomites Park. It’s a valley “from another time”, where nature, history and scenic beauty come together to offer an authentic experience in every season.
A valley that enchants
Conifer forests, flower-filled meadows and crystal-clear streams follow one another along the 4.5 km length of Val Fiscalina, which branches south from Sesto, surrounded by the majestic Sesto Dolomites. Many have described this area as one of the most beautiful Dolomite valleys of all — and it’s easy to see why.
Fun fact: in springtime, the valley bursts into bloom with rare Alpine flowers, creating breathtaking scenery for lovers of photography and hiking.
Outdoor sports and activities: Summer and winter

Winter
When the snow covers the landscape, Val Fiscalina becomes a paradise for winter sports. Among the activities:
- Cross-country skiing on panoramic trails
- Snowshoe hikes
- Tobogganing and snow excursions
- Winter horse riding and horse-drawn sleigh rides
Summer
With the arrival of the summer sun, the valley turns into the perfect starting point for:
- Hikes for all levels, ideal also for families
- Mountaineering towards the Tre Cime or Croda Rossa peaks
- Nordic walking
- Horse riding along forest trails
Sesto and the mountain sundial
A unique natural phenomenon awaits visitors in Sesto Pusteria: the Sesto sundial, a natural sundial formed by the alignment of the Dolomite peaks that indicate the time of day based on sunlight.
The “sundial peaks”:
- Cima Nove – Pala del Popera
- Cima Dieci – Croda Rossa di Sesto
- Cima Undici
- Cima Dodici – Croda dei Toni
- Cima Una
Watching the shadow move across the peaks during the day is a fascinating and educational experience, perfect for both adults and children.
A valley marked by history
During the First World War, Val Fiscalina was the scene of fierce battles between the Italian Alpini and the Austro-Hungarian Kaiserjäger, leaving behind traces still visible today in the trails, mountain huts and local accounts.
Many of today’s hiking routes follow ancient military paths, now transformed into scenic trekking itineraries.
Val Fiscalina is a living book of nature, history and poetry to be experienced step by step. Whether you want to walk beneath the Dolomite peaks, marvel at the Sesto sundial or retrace the memories of the Great War, you’ll find genuine emotions here in every season.
