Ahrntal Valley: Living traditions and authentic landscapes

The Ahrntal Valley is one of South Tyrol’s most fascinating valleys — a place where time seems to have stopped. Here, the agricultural and natural character has been carefully preserved, thanks to the love and dedication of the local people: artisans, breeders, and farmers who still proudly protect their identity today.

Strolling through the villages of the valley, you may come across hand-carved wooden masks used during traditional festivals, or admire precious bobbin lace, an ancient art still passed down from generation to generation.

From the Predoi Mine to Alpine tourism

Once, the true wealth of the valley came from the Predoi copper mine, one of the oldest in the Alpine region, active since the Middle Ages. Over time, the mine gave way to a new kind of wealth: mountain tourism.

It was thanks to some friends of Count Sternbach, the mine’s owner, that the small village of Cadipietra became a popular summer destination. As early as 1870, the first mountain guides were established, ready to accompany hikers and pioneers to the peaks of the Upper Ahrntal Valley.

Despite interruptions caused by the world wars, the opening of the first guesthouses marked the beginning of a conscious form of tourism based on respect for nature and tradition.

The must-see villages of the Ahrntal Valley

The valley is dotted with authentic villages, each with its own character:

  • Cadipietra, rich in history and the starting point for numerous hikes
  • Luttach, known for its traditional farmsteads and local crafts
  • Weißenbach, charming and tranquil
  • St. Johann and St. Peter, where South Tyrol’s rural soul is still alive
  • St. Jakob, surrounded by the peace of nature

In all these villages live the “Toula”, the valley’s inhabitants — proud guardians of a strong, distinctive dialect. Here, time still flows according to the rhythm of the land, and traditions proudly endure.
