Certosa in Val Senales

Certosa: Between spirituality and silence in Val Senales

At an altitude of 1,323 metres, Certosa (Karthaus) is a small gem in the heart of Val Senales, guardian of a fascinating history linked to the ancient Carthusian monastery founded in 1326. Today it is the municipal seat of the valley, but once it was one of the most secluded and contemplative spiritual centres in the entire Alpine arc.

A past marked by silence… and by fire

The Carthusian monks, known for their hermitic and contemplative lifestyle, chose this secluded corner to establish their monastery. However, tranquillity was often disrupted: the high taxes imposed on the local population caused tensions and even attacks by peasants, leading to the construction of a defensive wall, remains of which are still visible today.

In 1782, with the suppression of religious orders, the monastery was closed and sold to settlers and merchants. But in 1924, history took a devastating turn: a violent fire destroyed almost the entire monastic complex.

Today only a few original parts remain that can still be admired:

  • A section of the defensive wall
  • The evocative cloister
  • A grotto with a tomb
  • The ancient monastic kitchen

These places, though marked by time, still convey the deep charm of an ancient spirituality, immersed in silence and nature.

A destination for those seeking peace, sport and nature

Today, Certosa is a popular tourist destination all year round, thanks to its strategic location:

  • Just a few minutes from the Val Senales ski area, perfect for skiers and snowboarders
  • Very close to the Texel Group Nature Park, ideal for hiking, trekking and wildlife observation

Certosa is the perfect starting point for active, cultural or relaxing holidays, in an authentic and uncrowded setting.

Certosa is a place suspended between past and present, where nature preserves ancient memories and every visit becomes an opportunity to slow down and breathe deeply.
