Approaching the via ferrata

The main starting point is the parking lot at Bagni di Lavina Bianca, reachable from Bolzano via Prato Isarco and Tires. From here, take trail no. 2, which ascends steeply through forests and ravines until reaching Sella Cavaccio. You can either continue on the same trail or opt for trail no. 9, which then joins trail no. 1 to reach Rifugio Bolzano (2,450 m), perfect for a first rest stop.

From the refuge, continue along trail no. 4 to the junction with CAI 4B, which leads to the start of the equipped section of the Ferrata Maximilian, located at 2,560 meters.

The via ferrata route

Upon reaching the ridge, follow the path towards Cima di Terrarossa (2,655 m), marked by a small cross, then descend along the opposite side. The route alternates between equipped sections and free climbing passages on small rocks and exposed ridges, requiring attention and good balance.

After about 40 minutes, you’ll reach a saddle offering the option to descend directly to Rifugio Alpe di Tires via trail no. 4. Those who choose to continue along the entire via ferrata face more technical sections, including a narrow chimney, equipped passages, and sharp ridges, until reaching a striking natural arch.

The via ferrata ends with a descent on debris-covered terrain, unprotected, leading to Rifugio Alpe di Tires (2,440 m), reached about 2 hours after the start of the via ferrata section.

Return to the parking lot

From Rifugio Alpe di Tires, return to Lavina Bianca via trail no. 3, descending along the Val di Ciamin, passing through picturesque environments of forests and Dolomite walls. The return takes about 2 hours.

Tips from hikers

Many recommend hiking the Ferrata Maximilian from west to east, starting from Rifugio Bolzano and ending at Rifugio Alpe di Tires, as this allows you to face the more challenging parts on the descent.

The via ferrata is particularly appreciated for its breathtaking landscapes but is demanding in terms of duration and elevation gain. It is recommended for hikers with good physical preparation and accustomed to high-altitude routes.

Rifugio Alpe di Tires is a great final stop before returning, perfect for a break and to enjoy the splendid panorama.

Ultimately, the Ferrata Maximilian is the ideal choice for those seeking a complete adventure, among spectacular ridges and the enchanting Dolomites, in one of the most fascinating and authentic environments of South Tyrol.
