First part: Approach and entrance to the via ferrata
The route begins at the Rifugio Auronzo (2,320 m), which can be reached by car via the toll road from Misurina.
Following trail no. 101, reach the Rifugio Lavaredo (2,344 m) in about 30 minutes, and continue uphill to reach Forcella Lavaredo (2,454 m), one of the most famous viewpoints in the Dolomites.
From here, a short descent leads to the Rifugio Locatelli (2,450 m), a crossroads of trails. Proceed towards the entrance of the Paterno Tunnel, which is about 300 meters long. A headlamp is essential as the tunnel is dark and slippery.
At the end of the tunnel, the fixed ropes begin: after a short horizontal section, the ascent becomes steeper, passing beside old trenches and military positions. The via ferrata continues up rocky walls with exposed sections, but they are well-equipped with steel cables and steps, ending at Forcella del Camoscio. From here, you can choose whether to continue to the summit of Monte Paterno or descend back to Rifugio Locatelli, potentially completing a loop.
Second part: The via ferrata and ascent to Monte Paterno
Continuing towards the summit of Monte Paterno (2,744 m), you’ll encounter the final section, which is a diagonal climb on terraced rock and a short vertical section, not equipped but on solid rock.
The summit cross offers an incredible 360° view of the Dolomites of Sesto, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, and Croda dei Toni.
Useful tips and route notes:
Required experience:
The Ferrata De Luca-Innerkofler is not suitable for complete beginners. The exposed sections, narrow tunnels, and length of the route require familiarity with via ferratas. It is strongly recommended to be accompanied by an experienced companion or a mountain guide.
When to start:
In peak season, the area is very busy, and the parking lots at Rifugio Auronzo fill up quickly. Starting early in the morning ensures peace, parking, and less crowded paths.
Necessary equipment:
In addition to full via ferrata gear (helmet, harness, via ferrata set, gloves), a headlamp for the tunnel and trekking boots with good grip are essential.
