The Springs Trail, the educational path of waters
The Springs Trail, also known as Maite, is a fascinating educational path located in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, stretching for 1.5 km through the scenic Braies Valley.
Suitable for all, it is enriched with informative stations that illustrate the unique features of springs and drinking water, transforming the walk into a journey of discovery through the fundamental elements of this precious alpine ecosystem.
With its gentle elevation and short duration, it is perfect for families, nature lovers, and hikers eager to learn more about water resources.

An easy trail
Well signposted with the trail no. 37, the route begins in Old Braies and gently ascends towards the Maite spring area, located between the summit of Daumkofel and the Stolla stream. With a length of 1.5 km and an elevation gain of around 180 meters, the trail takes about 45 minutes to complete.
Along the way, you’ll encounter springs that feed into small streams, ponds, and pools filled with moss, creating a lush and humid environment that gives the place a fairytale-like atmosphere.
An educational experience
The Springs Trail was designed as a true educational route, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of water resources and their sustainable use. Along the way, visitors can learn how the spring water is channeled to supply drinking water, how it nourishes fishponds, and how it continues its natural course, enriching the landscape and maintaining the ecosystem.
The trail highlights the water cycle and the necessity of protecting the springs, which provide about 60% of the drinking water used in the region. Thanks to the educational panels, both adults and children can reflect on the importance of environmental conservation in an engaging and immersive context.
Some extra tips
To fully enjoy the tranquility of the trail, it’s recommended to start in the early morning, when the valley’s silence is only interrupted by the murmur of the water. Families with children will find plenty of opportunities to play and closely discover the alpine world.
A must-see stop is the fishing pond, perfect for a refreshing and panoramic break. The simplicity of the trail and the educational value of its stops make it ideal not only for families but also for hikers keen to deepen their knowledge of the water ecosystems of the Dolomites.
Walking along the Springs Trail, you will experience firsthand the perfect balance between water, soil, and vegetation, immersing yourself in the authentic heart of the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park.
