Latemar: The wild mountain of the Dolomites

The Latemar is a mountain group in the Dolomites, located between South Tyrol and Trentino — more precisely between Predazzo, Moena, Passo Costalunga, Lake Carezza, Obereggen, Passo Pampeago, and Passo Feudo. Characterized by its iconic horseshoe shape, it features pale rock peaks contrasting with the surrounding wooded areas.

A destination for true connoisseurs

Despite its extraordinary beauty, the Latemar is one of the least visited Dolomite ranges, which allows it to preserve an intimate and untamed atmosphere. The reasons for this lower influx of visitors lie in several factors:

Its more isolated position compared to groups such as the Catinaccio, Sciliar, Sella, and Sassolungo, which are all interconnected by a dense network of hiking trails. The Passo Costalunga and the Val di Fiemme and Val di Fassa valleys separate the Latemar from the more frequented mountains.

The limited number of hiking routes, which can be explored completely in just two days of trekking, makes it less appealing to those seeking extended itineraries.

Its geological structure, composed not only of dolomite but also of Middle Triassic limestone, which is particularly brittle. This feature has long discouraged many climbers, who preferred sturdier rock faces for their ascents.

Untamed hikes

On the South Tyrolean side, near Lake Carezza, lies an area known as the “Labyrinth of Latemar”: a fascinating maze of fallen boulders, rock crevices, and narrow passages — perfect for an adventurous hike. The route is engaging yet quite easy, and can be completed in just two hours.

For those seeking a more demanding trek, the Latemar Loop offers a medium-difficulty route with rocky steps and spectacular passages overlooking the Val di Fiemme and the Pale di San Martino.

Curiosity: Did you know?

The famous Italian painter Giovanni Segantini immortalized the Latemar in his works, captivated by its light contrasts and grandeur, preserving this iconic South Tyrolean landscape for posterity.

Thanks to all these qualities, the Latemar is a paradise for hikers who love tranquility and unspoiled natural scenery, far from the crowds.
