Earth Pyramids of Collepietra: Between Geology and Legend

The Earth Pyramids of Collepietra are a fascinating geological wonder that originates from a rare natural phenomenon. This natural spectacle usually forms in friable soil, where alternating torrential rains and periods of drought shape the landscape over centuries. Each pyramid is protected by a large stone at the top: when the stone falls, the pyramid begins to degrade, slowly transforming the landscape.

These formations are found in areas well sheltered from the wind and rise as silent sentinels of South Tyrol’s geological history.

The Legend of the Earth Pyramids

While science explains their origin, local tradition passes down a captivating legend.

It is said that once, in Collepietra, there was a lush meadow, cultivated for generations by the Dosser family. The harvest was always intended for the local priest, until one young member of the family decided to keep it for himself, leading to a dispute that reached the Collepietra court. The final verdict of the court awarded the entire proceeds of the field to the greedy farmer due to the lack of written evidence proving an agreement with the church.

But the sky did not tolerate this injustice: an epic storm indeed struck the farm, flooding it with rain throughout the night. The following morning, instead of the meadow, the young man found a devastated landscape: the land had collapsed, leaving only tall columns of earth topped with stones. Nature had delivered its justice.
