Castelvetere: the historical heart of the Bassa Atesina
Castelvetere (German: Castelfeder) is one of the most fascinating destinations in the Garden of South Tyrol. A Greek painter once described this area as the Arcadia of Tyrol, highlighting its unspoiled beauty.
This protected biotope is located on a porphyry hill above Ora, Montagna, and Egna. The sub-Mediterranean vegetation, consisting of meadows, steppe, and low shrubs, characterizes the area and gives it a unique appearance.
Ancient origins
In addition to its natural beauty, Castelvetere preserves historical traces of great value. The remains of a fortified structure, dating back to around 500 BC, reveal the prehistoric origins of this site. The almost mystical atmosphere that envelops the area fuels stories and legends.
One of the most fascinating elements is the fertility slide, a smooth and steep rock on which, according to ancient beliefs, women would slide down to encourage procreation. The surrounding walls, which once protected the settlement, and the Chapel of Saint Barbara, dating back to the 6th century, add further charm to this place. Among the most surprising discoveries are votive fires and archaeological artifacts, some of which date back as far as 2000 BC, providing evidence of human settlements in ancient times.

A paradise for hikers and families
Castelvetere is a beloved destination for hikers and families, thanks to the numerous scenic trails that traverse unique landscapes. The paths wind through low and high peat bogs, offering a journey into the local biodiversity, and eventually leading to the spectacular Rio Nero waterfall.
The hike up to the hill is an experience worth having. From the top, the view of the Bassa Atesina unfolds in all its beauty, offering a sight that is hard to forget!
