The Alpine Chapels of South Tyrol: Spirituality, Art and Nature

Anyone travelling through the glacial valleys of South Tyrol cannot fail to notice the small churches that rise from mountain slopes and plateaus. These architectural gems often stand in extraordinary panoramic locations, offering not only moments of spiritual reflection but also breathtaking views of the surrounding nature.

Ancient Origins and the Spirituality of Place

Since ancient times, the Rhaetian peoples identified energetic sites where they built their pagan temples. With the arrival of Christianity, those very same places were chosen to build churches and chapels — a phenomenon seen throughout Europe, as exemplified by the Cathedral of Syracuse, constructed atop a Doric temple.

The attraction of these sites is not based solely on their scenic beauty, but also on a sense of natural spirituality, often influenced by the presence of lakes, underground streams or other natural elements.

Some of the Most Enchanting Chapels in South Tyrol

Here are a few examples of churches built in places of striking beauty and strong energy:

  • Dreikirchen (Three Churches) – Barbiano: According to legend, three sisters fleeing from their persecutors prayed to God for salvation. He made three little churches rise close to one another — still visible today in Barbiano, surrounded by a fairytale landscape.
  • San Cipriano – Tires: Situated at the foot of the Catinaccio massif, this small church tells through its frescoes the legend of Saints Cyprian and Justina, depicting the miraculous protection of the Platzinder Meadow near San Cipriano. The saints are said to have shielded the field from lightning bolts cast by God by spreading out their cloaks.
  • San Giovanni in Ranui – Val di Funes: One of South Tyrol’s most photographed churches, thanks to its idyllic position with the Odle peaks in the background. Inside it preserves Baroque frescoes and a finely carved wooden altar.
  • San Giacomo – Ortisei: Considered the oldest church in Val Gardena, it is famous for its 14th-century Gothic frescoes depicting Saint James’s pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
  • Valdurna – Sarentino: Standing beside a scenic alpine lake, it offers an experience of deep tranquillity, enhanced by the reflection of the mountains in its waters.
  • Castelvecchio – Caldaro: Located in a commanding position, it offers a unique panorama over the Adige Valley.

Trails and Ways of the Cross: The Spiritual Path of Ascent

These chapels are often connected to the valley by panoramic trails or by Ways of the Cross — meditative paths that accompany the visitor on the ascent. It is no coincidence that the Italian word "ascesi" (asceticism) derives from "ascesa" (ascent), suggesting both a physical and spiritual journey.

Among the most evocative walks:

  • Via Crucis of Latzfons (Isarco Valley): leads to the Shrine of Our Lady of Latzfons, one of the highest pilgrimage sites in Europe.
  • Three Churches Trail (Dreikirchen): an easy yet fascinating hike among the three chapels of Barbiano, offering splendid views of the Dolomites.
  • Hike to San Giacomo in Ortisei: a forest and meadow path connecting the centre of Ortisei to the scenic hilltop chapel.

An Experience Not to Be Missed

Whether it’s a religious pilgrimage, a cultural hike or simply a walk in nature, visiting these alpine chapels is an experience that nourishes the spirit. Their charm lies in the encounter between faith, art and nature, and their age-old silence invites reflection and wonder.
