Castle Coldrano: Renaissance elegance in the heart of Val Venosta
Nestled at an altitude of 770 meters between the gentle slopes of Monte Sole and surrounded by orchards and chestnut groves, Castle Coldrano is one of the most refined artistic treasures of Val Venosta. Located in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Laces, this castle stands as one of the most captivating noble residences in South Tyrol.
Noble and mysterious origins
The exact origins of the castle remain shrouded in mystery, as do the identities of its earliest owners. What is certain, however, is that in the 16th century the Hendl family — one of the most influential noble families of the era — brought prestige and identity to the site. The Hendls also owned other castles, including Juval, Castelbello, and Mareccio, and thanks to their wealth, they were eventually granted the title of counts.

Architectural refinement in marble and majolica
Over the centuries, Castle Coldrano’s structure has been expanded and enriched with various architectural influences. Today, visitors can admire:
- An elegant Renaissance loggia
- Windows and portals framed in Lasa marble, renowned for its purity
- Two-tone staircases and finely carved wooden details
- Original majolica stoves
- A romantic Venetian-style balcony
Every corner of the castle tells a story of history, culture, and beauty.

Once a place for dancing, now a place for gathering
Interestingly, the enclosing walls surrounding Castle Coldrano were not designed for defense but rather to mark the boundary between the world of the nobles and that of the peasants. It is very likely that feasts, dances, and courtly gatherings were once held inside — as suggested by an ancient wine press dating back to 1701, still preserved in the cellar.
Over time, the castle served various purposes: it became a school, shelter, and parish seat after being donated to the municipality of Laces in 1863. Today, fully restored, Castle Coldrano has been reborn as a cultural center and venue for artistic, political, and educational events.
A castle to experience
Castle Coldrano is not just a site to admire — it is a living place, open to art, dialogue, and exchange. A perfect harmony of historic elegance and contemporary vitality, set against the unique backdrop of South Tyrol.
