The lesser-known castles around Merano
Beyond the famous castles of Tyrol, the area surrounding Merano hides three lesser-known yet equally fascinating fortresses. Each tells an important part of local history, blending nobility, religion, and military strategy.

San Zeno Castle
Perched on a rocky spur at the entrance to Val Passiria, San Zeno Castle stands in one of Merano’s most strategic locations. As early as Roman times, this site hosted a military outpost controlling trade routes. In the early Middle Ages, a chapel dedicated to Saint Zeno was built here and soon became a place of pilgrimage.
In the 13th century, the Suppan family built the first fortified structures around the chapel. Later, between 1285 and 1290, Meinhard II established his residence here, turning the complex into one of the seats of the Counts of Tyrol until 1347, when it was destroyed by order of Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg.
In the 19th century, the manor was purchased by Leopold von Braitenberg, who initiated its restoration, continued by his descendants.
Aura Castle
Overlooking the entrance to the Sopranes Valley, in the municipality of Tyrol, stands Aura Castle, a small yet historically significant structure. The palace was built in the 13th century to serve judicial functions related to nearby Tyrol Castle.
Over time, it passed through the hands of several owners, always maintaining its residential character. The complex consists of a noble residence and several smaller buildings that once housed the servants.
Today, the castle belongs to the Counts Khün family and can be visited by appointment only.

Torre Castle
Also known by its German name Schloss Thurnstein, Torre Castle dates back to 1276. Set on a rocky hill surrounded by vineyards, this manor offers a breathtaking view of the spa town of Merano.
Between the 16th and 17th centuries, it was renovated and expanded, taking on its present appearance. Today, it houses an exclusive hotel and restaurant, where the historical atmosphere blends with South Tyrolean hospitality.
Torre Castle is the perfect stop for those who wish to experience an enchanting journey between the Middle Ages and modern comfort.
