Hauenstein Castle: Between poetry, silence, and mountains
Perched on a majestic Dolomite rock at the foot of Punta Santner and the Sciliar massif, the ruins of Hauenstein Castle (Castelvecchio) are among the most enchanting destinations for lovers of history and nature.
Built in the 12th century, the fortress lies a short distance from Salego Castle and can be easily reached from Siusi, Salego, or the Ratzes Baths via panoramic trails that seem to lead straight into the heart of the Middle Ages.
The home of the poet-knight
Hauenstein Castle owes much of its fame to the poet and minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein, who in 1427 chose this residence as a retreat in search of peace and inspiration. A learned man and tireless traveler, Oswald turned this place into a spiritual and creative refuge, forever linking it to his remarkable poetic legacy.
Today, the castle belongs to the Diocese of Bolzano and Bressanone, which promoted its restoration on the 600th anniversary of the poet’s birth. During the works, fascinating frescoes in the chapel and several medieval artifacts in excellent condition were uncovered.
A fortress suspended in time
Walking among the ruins of Hauenstein Castle feels like crossing the threshold into another era. Surrounded by silence and the grandeur of the Dolomites, visitors can still sense the charm of courtly life, chivalric poetry, and distant centuries. Entrance is free, and the trail — blending nature and culture — is an open invitation to anyone wishing to discover the most authentic soul of South Tyrol.
