Castelforte and Castel Wolfsthurn: The silent guardians of Andriano

Nestled in the quiet of the Oltradige area, Andriano is a small village that hides two true gems of South Tyrol: Castelforte and Castel Wolfsthurn. Different in history and appearance, these two castles tell stories of distant eras and watch over the surrounding forests and valleys in silence.

Castelforte: The rock among the trees

About an hour’s walk from the center of Andriano, following trails that wind through broadleaf forests and panoramic viewpoints, you’ll reach the evocative ruins of Castelforte. Built on the red porphyry rock overlooking the Gaido gorge, the castle offers an immersive experience of both nature and the area’s ancient history.

The exact date of construction remains unknown, but the first written record dates back to 1220. Today, only a single-storey tower remains, accessible via a steep path. The drawbridge, once the only entrance to the castle, has long disappeared.

In 1530, a violent fire led to its destruction. It was later rebuilt and, in 1910, purchased and restored by a German commercial consultant, who preserved the authentic charm of the ruins.

A curious fact

The trail to Castelforte is very popular among hikers and those who enjoy peaceful walks, especially in autumn when the forest glows with warm, enveloping colors.

Castel Wolfsthurn: Elegance among vineyards and history

Overlooking the cultivated fields and green slopes above Andriano stands Castel Wolfsthurn, a fairytale-like castle distinguished by its tall central tower and solid defensive walls.

Built in 1280 by the Lords of Andriano on a previous settlement, the castle underwent several transformations over the centuries. In the 16th century, features enhancing its charm were added: a large courtyard, a garden, a farmhouse, and a fortified gate with defensive loopholes.

After falling into disrepair in later centuries, the castle was finally restored in the 19th century. Today it is the property of Baron Kripp, who completely renovated it in 1997, turning it into an elegant private residence.

Hospitality within the walls

The castle also hosts several holiday apartments within an organic farm. It’s the perfect retreat for those seeking a peaceful stay surrounded by vineyards and silence — with the authentic charm of a historic South Tyrolean manor.
