Castle Ehrenburg: Timeless elegance on the Rienza River

Castle Ehrenburg is located in the picturesque Val Pusteria, in the village of the same name, overlooking the left bank of the Rienza River. This fascinating manor was built in the 11th century and has undergone several extensions and modifications over the centuries, while preserving its noble and refined character.

A unique architecture between Medieval and Baroque

What makes the castle particularly interesting is its architectural structure, which is divided into two distinct wings. The southern, older section has remained intact in its original medieval form, while the eastern part was transformed in 1732 according to the principles of the Baroque style.

The true gem is the inner courtyard — an artistic masterpiece commissioned by Caspar Künigl and built by Luccio da Trento: a series of granite columns with square capitals supporting round arches, creating a stunning and elegant visual effect.

One of the best-furnished castles in South Tyrol

Castle Ehrenburg is one of the few castles in the region that is fully furnished, offering an authentic glimpse into the noble life of South Tyrol’s aristocracy. However, as it is privately owned, it is generally not open to the public except on special occasions or by appointment.

A place where history, art, and aristocratic charm meet. Even admiring it from the outside is a fascinating experience: Castle Ehrenburg stands as a refined example of harmony between medieval power and Baroque elegance — yet another reason to explore the cultural and natural treasures of Val Pusteria.
