Castle Castelbello: History and beauty in the heart of Val Venosta
Imposing and full of charm, Castle Castelbello dominates the Lower Val Venosta from a rocky spur overlooking the Adige River. Its origins date back to 1180, when it was built by the noble von Montalban family — a powerful lineage that was defeated by the Counts of Tyrol after 1200. From that time onward, the castle became the property of the Princes of Tyrol and, from the 14th century, also served as a judicial seat.
A contested castle
The castle’s history is marked by numerous changes of ownership until 1531, when the noble Hendl family took possession and began major expansion and restoration works. Unfortunately, between 1813 and 1824, a series of devastating fires severely damaged the structure, and only part of it was rebuilt for residential use.
In 1956, the State purchased the castle, but only after a long legal dispute with Count Sigmund von Hendl — resolved with a symbolic settlement of 31,068 lire (around 16 euros today).
Thanks to the work of the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, Castle Castelbello has since been completely restored and returned to its original splendor.
A unique panorama and a journey through history
Located where the “Latschander Gorge” opens into the valley floor, the castle offers a breathtaking view over Val Venosta. The surrounding landscape — framed by apple orchards and vineyards — provides the perfect backdrop for this fortress of remarkable historical value.
Inside, visitors can admire:
- A frescoed chapel featuring 14th- and 16th-century artworks restored in 2011
- The “alte Kuchl” (old kitchen) in the southern section
- Elegant noble halls and a beautifully maintained inner courtyard
- The permanent exhibition “Via Claudia Augusta”, which tells the story of the ancient Roman road that once crossed these lands
A castle that bridges past and present
Today, Castle Castelbello is far more than a medieval ruin — it is a living, vibrant place where history intertwines with art, culture, and landscape. Visiting this ancient fortress means stepping back in time and discovering, step by step, the authentic soul of Val Venosta.
